Svartmalmur book

Born as INTERVIEW WITH VERÐI LJÓS (CREATOR OF ICELANDIC BLACK METAL PHOTO BOOK SVARTMÁLMUR) Released this year, the stunning photo book Svartmálmur is a rare glimpse into the burgeoning Icelandic black metal scene, a work that offers both a strong aesthetic vision and an unique insight into this close-knit community. Since 2006, ljós (whose real name is Hafsteinn Viðar Ársælsson) has been fashioning an “apocalyptic, cyclical strain of dissonant aggression” (tQ) under the name Wormlust. But his new book, Svartmálmur, out now on Ditto Press, proves him to be as fine an artist when crafting with light on paper, as he is recording sounds on tape. Svartmalmur is a unique portrait of Iceland's black metal scene through the lens of photographer Verði ljós (also founder of black metal project, Wormlust). Taken over a period of three years, the project weaves together documentary and landscape photography with fiction to create an up close and personal view of a cloaked and mysterious world.

Iceland’s black metal scene has become one of the most prolific and accomplished in the world. The new book, “Svartmálmur,” presents a colorful snapshot of the illustrious Icelandic hordes. Despite sitting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 700 miles from Scotland, 900 from Norway, and being subjected to a relentless onslaught of cold, wet weather, Iceland is home to a thriving black metal scene – a scene that forms the subject of a new book titled Svartmálmur (‘black metal’ in Icelandic) by photographer Verði ljós, published by Ditto.
